In the United States, the modern celebration of Mother's Day began in the early 20th century, thanks to the efforts of Anna Jarvis. Jarvis's mother had been a peace activist who had cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and after her mother's death, Jarvis began campaigning for a day to honor all mothers.
In 1908, the first official Mother's Day celebration was held at a church in West Virginia, and by 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. The holiday quickly gained popularity and spread to other countries around the world, where it is now celebrated in various forms and on different dates.
